A 17-year-old boy from Chesapeake, Virginia died after being buried in sand when a dune collapsed at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Frisco, North Carolina.  The incident occurred in a remote back-dune area and was not visible from the main beach.  The boy was found buried under several feet of sand by family and friends who went looking for him.

Despite efforts by local emergency services and Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff to resuscitate him, he could not be revived.  The superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina expressed condolences to the boy's family and urged visitors not to dig deep holes on the beach due to the danger they present.  The investigation into the boy's death is ongoing, and his identity has not been released.
