Seven Horses Died at Churchill Downs in the Lead-Up to the 2023 Kentucky Derby!
08/05/2023

Seven horses died in the days leading up to and during the 2023 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.  Four horses died in the week before the race, while Chloe's Dream and Freezing Point were injured and subsequently euthanized on the day of the derby.  The causes of death for two other horses, Parents Pride and Chasing Artie, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., have not been released.

Wild on Ice and Take Charge Briana were also euthanized after sustaining injuries.  Code of Kings died on April 29 after breaking his neck before a race.  There has been no discernible pattern in the injuries sustained, according to Churchill Downs.  The racetrack will work with the Kentucky Horseracing Commission and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority to investigate each incident and continue to improve the safety of the sport.
